We Make Culture’s piece tells the story of ‘Sweet Caroline’ a young girl from Sunderland who is desperate to be a footballer and who teams up with her older neighbour to fulfil her dream. Laura Brewis, founder and director of We Make Culture, explained: “It’s a story of discovering your talent, overcoming stereotypes, finding your team and having confidence in yourself. “As part of the development of the piece, we’ve been working with sporting organisations and girls’ football teams in the city, including Washington AFC, North East Sport and the Foundation of Light. We have also gathered stories of older women to show the differences between girls’ experiences of playing football now and in the past.

Peter Curtis NE Sport: "NE Sport are happy to be working with We Make Culture CIC on Sweet Caroline and the Football Boots. We see the huge benefits for children and young people in taking part in music, art and sport, and are happy to support that to happen in any way. We also want help encourage more girls to get involved with football and sport, and think this is a great way to do it!"

Washington Millennium Centre: We are pleased to be supporting ‘We make Culture’.  It’s a new and different type of booking here at the Centre, as we haven't had any like it before. So we are excited to see lots of people enjoying the show

Lee Crosby at Foundation of Light:"The Foundation of Light are pleased to support initiatives such as the Sweet Caroline project and recognise the importance of working in partnership with colleagues and organisations like Laura and We Make Culture. The group of young people that have contributed from our Girls Academy teams have enjoyed being part of this project and look forward to seeing how their input has developed into the final production, which will be shown in local communities across Sunderland".
